Wilderness – Heli Rafting

West Coast Heli-Rafting

Tim guiding on the Karamea

New Zealand has more helicopters per head of population than anywhere else in the world ( well so they tell us ).  This enables us to access the remote, wild and scenic rivers of the north west of the South Island.

…hence the creation of Heli Rafting.

This unique form of adventure combines exhilarating helicopter flights up sub alpine river valleys with exciting white water descents through some of the South Island’s most challenging rivers.

From the time we step out of the helicopter where we begin our rafting, we are self-sufficient.  Some of our rafting trips take us through wilderness areas where not even a track or hut exist.  There are no roads or other trappings of civilization, just your team, food, equipment and the river to raft.

Rusty Guiding on the Karamea

Ultimate Descents New Zealand are heli-rafting specialists, we have been doing this since the early 1990’s.  We provide a high quality of service with an excellent safety standard.  All heli rafting trips have a safety kayaker on the river to support our descent.  Along with all specialist equipment provided. e.g. EPIRB, mountain radio, wilderness 1st aid, dry bags, camping, cooking, and last but not least fantastic food!

We run 1 day, 2 day, 3-day and 5-day expeditions and offer a raft support option for kayakers. Our multi-day expeditions involve a wilderness camp-out by the river, with nights spent around the campfire enjoying good company and eating delicious outdoor cooking.

If you are into fly fishing this is one of the best experiences you can get in New Zealand, rafting down the river taking in the amazing scenery and stopping where we choose to fish for the numerous trout in these untouched rivers.

Some of our most memorable moments have been on heli-rafting expeditions – these are the trips our guides queue up for. Definitely worth checking out!
