Just
1 and 1/2 hours south of Nelson on State Highway 6 you
will find the tranquil town of Murchison. The gateway
to the West Coast from the north. The Buller River runs
from its source at St Arnaud to the sea at Westport
on the west coast. (176 km's long) With four major rivers
joining the Buller within 15kms, north, south, east,
and west of Murchison, we are surrounded by water. With
the west coast's annual rainfall second only to Hawaii's
Kowhai Island, this gives us runnable white water all
year round. Once you reach Murchison, locate Fairfax
St (the old main street) and keep your eyes open for our base, the
large corrugated blue and white building.

International
paddlers are
just beginning to find out what kiwis have known
for years - New Zealand is a great kayaking destination.
The most popular
place for kayaking is where the majority of good
rivers are located, the Buller and West Coast regions
of the South Island. The town of Murchison is considered
as the white water capital of New Zealand, and for
good reasons. It has our largest range of accessible
paddling, from steep creeks, to big volume rivers
and runs suitable for beginners and experts alike. Reliable
river flows ensure good paddling year round
and its proximity to the Southern Alps makes Murchison
the ideal place to practice before launching yourself
into the challenges that West Coast Heli-Kayaking
has to offer.
