RAFTING the ULTIMATE whitewater

The Buller and West Coast are regarded as New Zealand's premier white water regions.

Almost every traveler exploring the South Island of New Zealand on their way from Christchurch or the West Coast up to Nelson, or going the other way, passes through Murchison, not just a great place to stop for gas and a rest. The Murchison area hosts a secret not everyone knows about - exhilarating white water and rugged West Coast scenery which make rafting the Buller Gorge an adventure not to miss. Join us on a raft journey through spectacular granite canyons for what is undoubtedly the Buller’s best rafting trip. “With the emphasis on fun and participation” Buller Gorge Rafting could well be the most enjoyable activity on your holiday in New Zealand. Being the only company to run Ariki Falls, our favourite run, gives us the luxury of being the only ones out on the water. That's right, just us and maybe the odd adventurous kayaker in the Buller river's untamable wilderness.

The view from the O'Sullivans West Coast bridge, Highway 6, South Island, New Zealand

The Buller river when first discovered was flat and utilised by the settlers to ferry gear down to the coast or up to Nelson via the many gold mining towns situated along the Buller. Major earthquakes throughout the region have seen debris, rocks and ground movement in the river which have now created white water rapids and exciting sections all the way down the Buller river. One of these particular features ( our favourite run ) is know by the locals as Ariki Falls, meaning "Chief" . It is an uplifted section of the river bottom which in low river levels makes for a five meter waterfall. Recent smaller earthquakes have reshaped the Chief of the Buller into a solid 4+ waterfall at low flows only run commercially by Ultimate Descents New Zealand.

• Consistent flows
• Reliable big volume rafting
• Biggest white water on the Buller
• Thrills for experienced and first timers alike

Controlled Standup surf in O'Sullivan's bottom eddy, medium high flow ( play rafting at it's best )

Not only do we have some of the most exciting, scenic and remote rivers in the country, the Buller River is the largest free flowing in New Zealand meaning we have water - and plenty of it all year round!

We offer a large range of river trips and can cater for all levels of adventure.

So whether you‘re a big water rafting thrill-seeker, want the unique experience of a heli-rafting expedition, or just want a safe and entertaining family rafting experience - UDNZ has a trip for you.
